Abstract

The nitrogen accumulation and root carbohydrate content of four groundnut cultivars were studied. No major differences were found between cultivars in the percentage N content of the leaves, stems, husks or kernels. In locally selected lines rate of N accumulation increased when kernel growth commenced, but this did not occur in a cultivar not adapted to local conditions, The rate of total N accumulation varied among the cultivars as did the total accumulated. Root total non-structural carbohydrate content increased in all the cultivars after reproductive growth commenced and later decreased, usually after stem growth had ceased. The rate of N accumulation was not well related to root carbohydrate content.
