Abstract

The value of intercropping cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) with maize as a means of controlling 3 major cowpea pests was investigated by varying the time of sowing of the cowpea intercrop. Simultaneous sowing of maize and cowpeas tended to increase infestation of cowpeas by Maruca testulalis but not by Cydia ptychora and thrips (mainly Megalurothrips sjostedti). Subsequent intersowing of cowpeas in maize, however, showed marked increase in the incidence of thrips and Cydia in the intercrops. Control of these pests by insecticide was not increased by intercropping. The extent of insect damage in the intercrops was determined by the interaction between sowing date and cropping method. Sowing cowpeas at 12 wk after the establishment of maize significantly reduced insect damage and therefore appears to be the best time to intercrop to achieve some measure of control of these pests. These findings are relevant to the development of a pest management scheme for cowpeas involving the ecological concept.
