Abstract

Pot-grown plants of groundnut cv. Virginia Bunch were defoliated at peg formation, early pod formation, active pod formation and late pod formation, and sampled weekly or at 2-weekly intervals from week 6. In all treatments only the proportion of flowers which formed early in the flowering phase contributed to pod yield at maturity. In treatments where defoliation caused a reduction in pod yield, final pod number was reduced by inhibition of further fruit formation and degeneration of pods already formed. The data indicated that a min. leaf area of 50 cm² was required to retain a pod
