Abstract
Mathematical formulae and a breeding scheme for the selection of mutants that can be used directly, based on these formulae, are presented. It is concluded that mutation breeding is inefficient for this purpose since the minimum tolerable population size per generation is estimated to be 200 000. It is suggested that, on a smaller scale, it be used as a source of variation in hybridization work
