Abstract
Twenty large-seeded mutants were induced in the cultivar DA-I (Spanish type) by treating seeds with ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS; 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 or 0.5%) or γ-rays (100, 200 or 300 Gy). Lower doses of EMS (0.2 and 0.2%) were more effective than higher doses of EMS or γ-rays: in the latter treatment, 100 or 200 Gy doses were more effective than 300 Gy. The mutants bred true in M3 and M4 suggesting that they were recessives which were detected as homozygotes in the M2 generation. The mutants had up to 35% higher pod weight than the parent, which more than compensated for lower pod numbers per plant, to give higher yields of pods per plant. At least one mutant should warrant release as a new cultivar
