Abstract
Indian Vertisols are among the soils with the highest cultivation potential in semi arid environments, but the output fiom these soils does not match their potential because their structural properties, including instability of aggregates to wetting, cause limited draining capacity which often leads to runoff and erosion. Soil structure and it's stability to wetting is a determining factor in the fate of the rain water. Furthermore soil structure influences the complex combination of physical, chemical and biological processes taking place in the soil ecosystem. Hence, the soil structure and the soil biota interact, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM fungi) is believed to play and important role in this interaction....

Additional Information: | I have been privileged to have support and advise and from experts from different fields and from different parts of the World. I first and foremost would like to thank my Danish supervisor, Dr. Leif Petersen for his encouragement and unconditional support both in Demark and during his visits to ICRISAT. I further thank Dr. Koffi Laryea and Dr. Keuk-Ki Lee, my supervisors during my three stays at ICRISAT for valuable discussions and support. I would also like to thank Dr. Iver Jakobsen for his guidance and help during this project and Dr. Soren Rosendahl for introducing me to the world of identification of fungi. Special thanks go to Dr.Michael Miller and Dr.Julie Jastrow for extremely valuable discussions and continuous encouragement. |
