Abstract
A variegation mutant (Vm) was isolated in the M2 generation after gamma irradiation. The mutant continually segregated equal numbers of variegated and virescent (v) progeny and it was not possible to isolate nonsegregating plants. This suggested that Vm was an unstable allele which mutated to the stable recessive allele (v). The results of reciprocal crosses suggested that male gametes carrying Vm do not participate successfully in fertilization and it was considered that this was caused by another mutation close to the v locus. Vm was dominant to v but recessive to the normal allele producing green plants
