Abstract
Sorghum downy mildew [Peronosclerospora sorgki (Weston and Uppal) C.G. Shawl is widespread on sorghum and maize crops in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. There is much information available about its epidemiology, variability and control in the USA and Asia, but a scarcity of information on these aspects in Africa. This information is important to the successful management and control of the disease. The potential of P. sorghi to reduce yield has made it a priority to investigate these aspects in Africa.A survey of the geographic distribution of P. sorghi was undertaken in Nigeria and Zimbabwe, and parts of Zambia, Mozambique and Rwanda. In the humid forest of southern Nigeria only maize crops were infected within an epidemic zone of about 5 .Ox104 km2. In an early- and mid-season survey the mean incidence (% plants infected) in diseased maize crops was 18.8 and 30.5 % respectively. In the more arid north of Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Rwanda there was a scattered distribution of P. sorghi on both sorghum and maize crops. Infected crops were found from sea level to over 1500 m, commonly occurring in dry, woodland type vegetation.....
