Abstract

New cases (138) of Calonectria crotalariae affecting >3000 acres of groundnuts were reported from 13 N. Carol. counties. Symptoms were first reported in early July and were abundant by mid-Aug. The fungus was recovered from field soil in which leguminous plants had not been planted for 3 yr. Some control was achieved by using wide spectrum soil biocides, especially Na azide. The 23 cvs. tested varied in susceptibility but the Spanish types were the least susceptible.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In field trials in 1973, yields of groundnut cv. Florigiant were increased significantly by the presowing application of 20-40 lb sodium azide a.i./ac for control of C. crotalariae, especially when combined with a 2nd application 30-40 days later of 4-7 lb a.i./ac.
