Abstract

India witnessed a quantum increase in foodgrain production from 51 million tonnes during 1950-51 to about 190 million tonnes in 1994-95. Despite this development, starvation and malnutrition have become a perpetual problem, particularly in rural families and more so, with the women and children, No doubt, the phenomenal increase in foodgrains, milk, vegetables, eggs, fish and meat over the years had very little impact in view of nearly 3-fold increase of population since our independence. By the turn of this century, the situation Is bound to get aggravated further when country has to sustain over a billion of the population from its present level of 950 million
