Abstract
pennisetum is a polybasic genus including several species which have been grouped into primary, secondary and tertiary gene pools depending on the ease with which they intercross with the cultivated species viz. P.glaucuM.Several interspecific hybrids were obtained from crosses between P.glaucum and two other species from the tertiary gene pool. Development of modern techniques such as restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) would facilitate the study of phylogenetic relationships among the various species and the characterization of interspecific hybrids.
