Abstract
Diseases of pods, kernels and seeds and their prevention and control are described. Fungi isolated from pod rots and surface-sterilized kernels are listed. Fusarium oxysporum and F. solani f.sp. phaseoli were consistently isolated from "pale testa" type of pod rot, but only F. oxysporum was able to reproduce symptoms when inoculated on surface-sterilized detached pods and kernels. Infections were produced with difficulty in actively growing pods, although mature pods were attacked. Corticium rolfsii and Macrophomina phaseolina were sometimes observed on pods. Seeds that failed to germinate were mostly attacked by Aspergillus niger, A. flavus or Rhizopus sp. Crown rot due to A. niger is the only important seedling disease. From seedlings with damping-off Fusarium oxysporum, Thanatephorus cucumeris and Enterobacter aerogenes were isolated
