Abstract

As a result of the intensive effort that has gone into corn improvement during the past half century. corn breeders of the United States are faced with the fact that further significant advances in the productivity of present day "corn belt" hybrids is very difficult to achieve. Past increase in the yield potential was brought about largely through the separation and concentration of the various yield factors existing in the corn varieties of the United States. To achieve further advances, corn breeders will need to look elsewhere for new sources of yield genes or hereditary components.
