Abstract
Increased crop yield is the objective of most of the agronomic practices the entire world over. Post-planting cultivation of row crops has long been practiced to eradicate weeds. Weeds, if not destroyed, compete with the main crop for nutrients, moisture and light (29, 48, and 49) and reduce economic yields. Recently herbicides have been introduced which permit weed control without disturbing the soil. However, cultivation in weed-free corn (weeds controlled by herbicides) on some soils has still resulted in an increase in yield. Blake and Aldrich (4) reported an increase of 16 bushels per acre (3 years average) in corn yields from cultivated plots on Sassafras loam when compared with effective chemical weed control.
