Abstract

Many of the pests which feed upon or compete with corn in the field are well known and recognized by the general public as well as by the farmer. The depredations of weeds, disease pathogens, insects, nematodes, and, to a lesser extent, small rodents are well catalogued in scientific literature. Additional well-known hazards to efficient corn production include incomplete or unbalanced soil fertility and unfavorable climate, either in the form of a generally unfavorable season or as individual disruptive storms. Often the peril is two or more of these destructive forces acting in concert as, for example, when the feeding hole of an insect serves for ingress of a fungal pathogen, which in turn weakens the stalk enough for it to be broken in a wind storm.
