Abstract
Evaluations of the factors responsible for acid soil injury of plants have been the subject of numerous investigations. The poor growth associated with acid soils is a complex function of many possible contributing physiological factors such as a deficiency of calcium, molybdenum, phosphorus, and nitrogen or the toxicity of hydrogen ions, aluminium, iron and manganese. All of these factors are modified by liming, however there is little agreement among the different investigators as to the relative importance of these factors in the growth responses of plants to applications of lime.
