Abstract
The world-wide rapidly expanding population has created an increasing demand for food production (46) and a world shortage of food proteins (116). Plants, the true protein producers, consist of approximately 40% carbon and 2% nitrogen in their tissues. It has been estimated on a world-wide scale that 200 billion tons of carbon are fixed annually by photosynthetic processes, which would require the incorporation of approximately 10 billion tons of nitrogen (11). The supply of the required nitrogen from commercial fertilizers has been affected by the energy crisis.
