Abstract
In greenhouse experiments, simultaneous inoculation of root regions of 1- to 2-wk-old groundnut plants with toxigenic and atoxigenic A. flavus strs. resulted in lower levels of aflatoxin B1 in the groundnut kernels at maturity compared with plants that were inoculated with the toxigenic strains alone. Of the 7 atoxigenic strains tested, 6 strs. showed reduction in aflatoxin production to varying extents. Pre-inoculation of atoxigenic strains 1 d earlier resulted in greater inhibition of aflatoxin production. However, toxin level was not much reduced when the atoxigenic strain was introduced 1 d after the toxigenic strain. Inoculation of an atoxigenic strain at 5-fold higher spore concn within 12 h of toxigenic strain inoculation, led to a significant reduction in aflatoxin B1. It is suggested that atoxigenic A. flavus strs. could be useful in biological control against pre-harvest aflatoxin contamination of developing groundnuts, subject to practicability of the approach
