Abstract
Competition among plants was probably observed centuries before it was acknowledged in designing systems for efficient crop management. In fact, inter-plant relationships played a dominant role in the domestication of crop plants. The objectives of many early investigations of plant competition were related to bulk methods of breeding, particularly with the small grains. More recently, plant-to-plant and row-to-row competition have been studied for purposes of developing early generation yield trails where limited seed is available.
