Abstract

Groundnuts cv. Early Bunch and Robut 33-1 (Virginia types) and TMV-2 and White Spanish (Spanish types) were grown in a series of experiments in phytotron greenhouse cabinets, open greenhouse space and artificially lit cabinets. Flower, peg and pod numbers were consistently enhanced by short-day (SD) treatments thus groundnuts were considered as facultative SD plants. Flower and peg numbers at 60-70 d from emergence were approx. doubled by 12-h days compared with plants in 16-h days. Peg numbers were highly correlated to flower numbers, and their ratio was independent of differing photoperiod treatments, suggesting that there was no major effect of daylength on flower abortion. Pod number, and therefore yield, was more influenced by photoperiod than was flower or peg formation. With similar peg numbers there could be 3 to 12-fold increases in pod numbers in plants exposed to SD compared with those exposed to to LD. Photoperiodically induced changes in flower and fruit numbers were independent of growth and plant DW. Conversely, temp. and light intensity affected flower number, and these changes were correlated with growth-related changes in leaf number and plant DW
