Abstract

A field experiment in 1980 and 1981 on Fox loamy sand studied the influence of 5 successive harvest dates on the agronomic and chemical characteristics of groundnuts grown in Ontario. A Spanish type (cv. Comet) and a Valencia type (cv. McRan) were examined. Delaying harvest increased yield, sound mature grain, seed:hull ratio, oil content and economic return. CP tended to be higher in immature groundnuts but the I number and oil stability showed larger differences between cv. than among harvest dates. Cv. differences were also apparent for fatty acids, and more mature groundnuts tended to be higher in oleic acid and lower in palmitic, behenic and lignoceric acids
