Abstract

This thesis examines the alternative data collection techniques of the sample survey and farm records with respect to the accuracy of the data collected. Error can be introduced in to the data through respondent error, enumerator error, questionnaire error and sampling error. Given data collected by both techniques under the Egypt Water Use and Management Project at the El Hammami site, the data collection methods are reviewed in light of potential error . It i s hypothesized that data of single-point, registered nature are best collected by the sample survey method while data of routine and recurring nature are better collected by the farm records technique. Analysis is conducted both qualitatively and quantitatively. It is shown that structural data such as farm size, family size, number and value of livestock, and value of crop production are best collected by the sample survey technique. Data concerning cropping intensity and value of home consumption of production are better collected by the farm records method. Finally, the data collection technique to be used in the construction of a crop enterprise budget should be predicated on the type of data needed to construct an accurate budget. A recommendation for the best data collection technique for this purpose is made.
