Abstract

Head Smut caused by Sphacelotheca reiliana(Kuhn) Clint., occurs on sorghum(Sorghum Vulgare Pers), sudangrass(S. vulgare var. Sudanese(Piper) Hitch.) and Corn(Zea mays L.). The Fungus causinghead smut of sorghum was first described by Kuhn as Ustilago reiliana in 1875 from a specimen collected in Egypt in 1868. In the following year M.C. Cooke described it oncorn in India. As the Soriare covered by a more or less persistent peridium, Clinton (8) in 1902 proposed the present name Sphacelotheca reiliana
