Abstract

The conventional procedures used by tomato breeders to develop commercial tomato varieties possessing high levels of curIy top resistance were studied to evaluate their validity and usefulness. Since past curly top breeding programs have used either a modified backcross method or an intercross method, the current study was mainly concerned with curly top tests of: (1) the backcross progeny of the F1 hybrid (Lycopcrsicon esculentum Mill. X L. peruvlanum var. dentatum Dun.) backcrossed to L. esculentum Mill. ; (2) the breeding lines CVF4 and C5, developed by intercrossing a number of low to moderately resistant breeding lines that were initially developed by the modified backcross; and (3) "F2 '' progency of the field-pollinated F1 hybrid...
