Abstract
Under normal field conditions the root system supplies the crop plant with necessary water and mineral nutrients. For an adequate performance, the root system must be able to establish a certain area of contact with the soil. The larger the absorptive area the higher the potential intake. Thus, the development of the root system in depth and lateral spread is an important factor and regulates the possibilities of soil utilization.
