Abstract
Genotypic and environmental variance are the primary factors which determine progress from selection.Together they determine the heritability of a trait under selection as well as the genetic advance from selection. The larger genotypic variance is relative to environmental variance the greater the efficiency of selection. The different magnitudes of genotypic and environmental variance that are encountered in different environments have caused plant as well as animal breeders to consider if there is opportunity to obtain greater progress from selection in a particular type of environment.
