Abstract

The genus Arachis consists of 30-50 different species. Of these, only Arachis hypogeum L. is extensively cultivated. First cultivated by the Indians in South America, peanuts are now a crop of worldwide importance. The United States produced 3,274 million pounds of peanuts in 1972. Peanuts have been the number one cash crop in Georgia since 1965. In 1972, peanuts were the number two source of income for Georgia farmers, exceeded only by broilers. Georgia growers grossed over 198 million dollars from 500,000 acres of peanuts, or approximately 400 dollars per acre. Among major field crops grown in the United States, peanuts rank second in value per acre and ninth in percent of total acres.
