Abstract

The mechanism of alleviating water stress by leaflet angle variation was studied for cv. Tindivanam 2 (TMV 2) groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) plants. A simple method of measuring leaflet angle was also devised. Radiation avoidance by leaf closure was exhibited to different degrees by water stressed and non-stressed plants. Leaflets in plants under continuous water stress had reduced areas and showed greater leaflet movement (leaf closure) compared to the amount of movement of leaflets on plants without water stress. Avoidance of radiation interception by leaflet movement occurs in groundnut plants under water stress
