Abstract
This study examines the effects of farm mechanization in Colombia because there are few case studies of the benefits to less developed countries of technologies imported from the quite different economic environments of richer nations. A special feature of the Colombian situation is that the process of farm mechanization has been subsidized relative to investment in other sectors of the economy. This subsidy has been an important element in the rapid growth of farm mechanization in Colombia. Most of the benefits of the mechanization process, however, have accrued to larger farmers tho earn high rates of return from mechanizing their operations. Smaller farmers do not share in these private gains as mechanization is ill-suited to their productive needs.
