Abstract
A knowledge of the factors controlling DNA synthesis is essential to an understanding of the growth and development of all organisms. One of the enzymes commonly studied in connection with DNA synthesis, thymidine kinase, catalyzes the transfer of a phosphate group from ATP to the 5-hydroxyl of thymidine to produce TMP (1). The production of TMP is an essential step in the formation of TTP from thymidine and may therefore regulate DNA synthesis by directly controlling the level of one of its precursors.
