Abstract

It has been suggested that the high level of adaptation present in today's crop varieties has been attained at the cost of a serious loss of genetic variability. Furthermore unplanned introduction and inadequate sampling may have limited the germ plasm which plant breeders have used and exploited. The purpose of this study was to estimate means and genetic variability among segregates from hybrid combinations between Corn Belt oat varieties and exotic lines. The crosses were made in various combinations and in single, three-way, and more complex crosses to provide information for knowledgeable planning of a breeding program designed to increase the quantity of useful variability in oat breeding populations.
