Abstract

The Occurrence of peanut mottle virus (PMV) in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) was first reported by Kuhn in 1965 (31). The characteristic symptom of the disease is subtle mottling on the developing leaves. Later, similar peanut virus diseases were reported in Australia (4), Bulgaria (42), Japan (26), and Venezuela (22). Although these virus isolates appeared to produce similar symptomatology on peanuts and have similar in vitro physical properties, they could be differentiated by their reactions on their hosts. For instance Vigna sinesis (L.) Savi and Phaseolus lunatus L., two common hosts of the Georgia isolate (31), were not infected by the Venezuela isolate (22). Gomphrena globosa L., a non-host for the Georgia, Australia, and Venezuela isolates, was shown to be infected locally but not systemically by the Japan isolate.
