Abstract
Nigeria is the world's third largest producer of groundnuts with approximately 10% share of world production. In contrast, India and Mainland China account for 20% and 33%, respectively, of world output. Since the end of World War II Nigeria has become the largest exporter of groundnuts in the world, accounting for between 20% and 40% of World export. This position was made possible by the withdrawal of India from the export trade in groundnuts. The table below illustrates the relative shares of Nigeria and West Africa in world trade in groundnuts for selected years.
