Abstract

To facilitate future agricultural development, the present traditional system of canal irrigation in North India should be modernized and improved to match the needs of modern agriculture. This study investigates and analyzes in detail the aspects of the canal irrigation institutions, in- cluding operation, design, and administration, which directly affect the farmers' performance and the economics of their operations, This is considered particularly in the context of the new high yielding varieties of food grains and chemi- cal fertilizer, two major components of the new agricultural technology.
