Abstract

The response of groundnuts cv. SB XI to 3 irrigation depths (2, 4 and 6 cm) and I:E ratios (0.50, 0.75 and 1.00) was studied in a glasshouse on a sandy loam soil for 2 consecutive years. The I:E ratio is the ratio between a fixed depth of irrigation water and cumulative pan evaporation from Class A open pan, less rainfall since previous irrigation. Yield components and pod yield were significantly affected by both irrigation depth and I:E ratio. Water use efficiency was higher in the 2nd year. The higher I:E ratio proved to be inferior in terms of water use efficiency. I:E ratio of 0.75 was recommended for cv. SB XI as the optimum irrigation index for potential yield and water use efficiency in the prevailing agroclimatic conditions. To ensure adequate moisture in the effective root zone, 6 cm net irrigation was considered to be the best irrigation depth
