Effect of irrigation levels on growth and yield of Kabuli chickpea (Cicer arietinum) genotypes

Abstract

The experiment was conducted at CCSHAU Research Farm, Hisar (29°10′N latitude, 75°46′E longitude and 215.2 m altitude) in split-plot design with four replications. Experiment consisted of three environments of moisture i. e. severe stress (no post-sowing irrigation), mild stress (one irrigation at 70 DAS) and non-stressed (two irrigations at 70 and 110 DAS) in main plots with five genotypes, namely, HK 00-300, HK 99-214, HK 98-155, HK 00-290 and HK-1 in sub-plots. The growth of chickpea in terms of plant height, dry matter accumulation, LAI, LAD and CGR decreased with increase in moisture stress. The effect of moisture stress was more pronounced with advancement of crop season. The LAI and LAD along with CGR reduced after 120 days due to start of senescence. The moisture stress reduced the seed and biological yield significantly among all the three environments. Among the genotypes, seed yield, biological yield and harvest index were recorded maximum in HK 98-155, which differed significantly from other genotypes and this genotype with high yield potential was observed most tolerant to drought conditions. However, biological yield was significantly higher in HK-1 and HK 00-290 was significantly lower than all other genotypes.
