Abstract
n trials in the kharif [summer monsoon] seasons of 1966, '67 and '68, 3 fodder crops grown on 2 soils were given 0-60 kg K2O/ha at sowing, in addition to a basal dressing of NP or P. Sorghum cv. M.P. Chari and maize hybrid Ganga-3 showed little response to applied K on red gravelly sandy loam soil, and a marked response on medium black soil in 1967 only when rainfall was high and continuous during the growth period; sorghum yields in 1967 on plots given no K (6.62 t/ha) increased by 1.43 t/ha with 30 kg K2O/ha and maize yields on plots given no K (2.89t/ha) increased by 0.73 t/ha with 60 kg K2O/ha. Applied K tended to decrease the CP content in the DM. Cowpea cv. Russian Giant showed a yield response to applied K on red gravelly loamy soil in 1968 only; application of 25 kg K2O/ha increased DM yield from 2.31 to 2.85 t/ha and CP content from 15.9 to 17.7%.
