Abstract

The origin of the present publication stems from the accumulation of data in Kenya which supplemented that in a typescript list prepared about 1934 and compiled by T. J. Anderson, from records prepared by Entnmologists in all territories, of which the very few copies available have been in almost constant use by entomologists since that time. That list is now quite out of date and the need for a similar list, brought up to date In nomenclature and including the new records that have accumulated, together with references tn literature, has long been felt. The East African Specialist Entomological Committee, at its meeting at Morogoro in 1954, stressed the need for an up to date compilation. Entomologists in the territorles Promised assistance in the provision of lists of insects, and i was asked by the Committee: to edit the compilation. With official approval i agreed to undertake the work in so far as this was compatible with my normal official duties. In the event, the work, despite much assistance, proved far more onerous than seemed Possible at that time and this must be held to explain, if not excuse, some of its shortcomings.
