Abstract

Five strains selected for their diverse plant characteristics and origins were evaluated for ten agronomic variables in a diallel experiment. Yield was positively correlated with pod number per plant, seed number per pod, 1000-seed weight and plant size measured by height and branch length. Yield was negatively correlated with virus score. Genetic variability among F1 plants for the ten variables was largely accounted for by highly significant general-combining-ability effects, although specific-combining-ability effects were observed for five traits. The former effects were much larger than the latter. Specific-combining-ability effects were generally nonsignificant, suggesting that the variables are predominantly controlled by loci with additive gene effects. Hence breeding systems employing additive genetic variance should be effective for improvement of the five strains.
