Abstract
Results from weed competition studies on groundnuts at Kwadaso in the forest zone of Ghana showed a 50% reduction in kernel yield due to unchecked weed growth. Four weeks of weed-free conditions after sowing were necessary to produce near optimum yields. The critical period of weed competition was at 4-6 weeks after sowing, and weeding beyond 4 weeks did not increase yields significantly. The most promising pre-em. herbicides at Kwadaso were metobromuron, fluorodifen and penoxalin [=pendimethalin] applied at 2, 3 and 1 kg/ha, respectively. At Nyankpala, in the savannah zone, napropamide at 4 kg, fluorodifen 2 kg and an alachlor + prometryne mixture at 1 kg/ha of each component were the best herbicides, in that order.
