Abstract
In field experiments at Parbhani in Maharashtra, India, a new insecticide, Oncol [benfuracarb] was compared with different formulations of carbofuran and also with endosulfan for the control of Atherigona soccata on sorghum. Carbofuran as 3% granules (applied at 0.67-2 kg/ha) or as a seed treatment (applied at 0.3-0.45 kg/ha) resulted in the tallest plants, and the granules also in the lowest numbers of dead-hearts, but benfuracarb at 0.91 kg/ha gave similar results to carbofuran seed treatment. All the insecticides gave similar grain and fodder yields, except for endosulfan which was less effective. Benfuracarb, even at the lowest rate (0.39 kg/ha) was as effective as carbofuran seed treatment if applied 3 times, but the seed treatment gave the best financial return
