Abstract
Application of 2 kg a.i. Thimet 10 G [phorate]/ha increased the NH4-N content and decreased NO3-N content in red soil during the first 3 wk; thereafter nitrification was increased up to the 8th wk. Application of 1 kg atrazine/ha had no effect on contents of any form of N in soil. Interaction of phorate with levels of applied N (0-100 kg/ha) showed that nitrification inhibition with phorate was more pronounced at the lower N levels than at higher levels. The N uptake and DM production by sorghum were not affected by changes in soil nitrate levels up to 20 days after sowing, but at 60 days they were significantly increased in the phorate-treated plots
