Abstract

From 1 to 21 days old male White Mountain chickens were given diets with about 54 to 72% sorghum grain harvested at 30 to 60 days past half-anthesis and of varieties high (HTS: Savanna and IS6881) or low (LTS: RS610) in tannin. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were given similar diets for 21 days. Immature HTS contained more tannin and was nutritionally inferior to mature HTS. There was no detectable tannin in LTS at either stage of maturity and nutritional quality was not affected by early harvest. At both stages of maturity, growth was depressed by HTS as compared with LTS
